SHOW NOTES:
What’s the first section that should be on your resume?
A professional summary that is a brief statement that describes your experience and why you qualify for a role. Sample Statement: I am a collaborative, mission-driven, innovative Attorney with 10 years of experience as in-house general counsel for large corporations.
What should be next on your resume?
A bullet point list of key words that describe your skills, titled “Areas of Expertise” or “Core Competencies,” that you pull directly from the job description, to communicate why you’re a good fit for a particular role.
What should be next?
Your work experience section should be next and should be limited to 3-4 roles and should include no more than 10 years of work history.
Should you include internships on your resume as a working professional?
Yes, especially if your internship is directly applicable to the role. However, if the internship is fairly old, then include the internship as an honorable mention instead of a full description of work.
How long should your resume be?
Ideally, a resume should be one page, UNLESS you are applying for director level and above roles. In that case, two pages is acceptable.
Can you lie on your resume?
You cannot and should not lie on your resume. Make sure that the days and months that you worked at a job, your job title and what you did in the role are accurate. If you do try to artificially fluff your resume, at the very least make sure that whatever you include on your application, in your resume and on your LinkedIn profile are consistent.
Should we include Honors, Awards or Community Service?
Only if you have space. If including any of these things will be the difference between you having a one-page or two-page resume, save them for an application, cover letter or interview.
Where should your education go on your resume?
If you’re a recent graduate, include your education at the top of your resume. If you’re more than 5 years out of school include it at the bottom. Only include a GPA with your education if you have above a 3.5 and that goes for graduate school and undergraduate school.

After the “slap” heard round the world in defense of a woman with Alopecia, y'all KNOW we were going to have to run this episode back! This Bonus Episode of The Sugar Free Podcast, Real Bald and Boujee Part I (Remix) feat. Michelle Gipson, is an exploration of life with alopecia. Join Syd and Michelle as they share their individual and collective journeys navigating life as women without hair. Michelle Gipson is a writer, host and counselor by trade as well as the founder and publisher of Written Magazine and Wine With Words®. You can learn more about Michelle and Written Magazine at www.writtenmag.com Bald fade, bald and bougie, bald and beautiful, no hair don’t care…etc. Rocking bald or low cuts for women has become widely accepted and incredibly popular. But the vast majority of bald, beautiful, empowered women we see made the CONSCIENCE CHOICE to be bald… and what a beautifully, freeing choice. However, because it was their choice, tomorrow they could choose differently and be halfway to a teeny weeny fro and within a year a full head of beautifully cascading hair. But what about those women who don’t have a choice? What if you woke up one morning to find handfuls of your hair lying on your pillow? This is the reality for scores of people and women who live everyday with alopecia. INFORMATION ABOUT ALOPECIA Alopecia is an auto-immune disorder that leaves those afflicted with little, and in some cases, no hair. The disease effects 6.8 million people in the U.S., including show host Syd Mack, and there is no cure. September is Alopecia Awareness month, a month dedicated to spreading knowledge and awareness about alopecia. If you want to find out more about alopecia, visit the National alopecia Areata Foundation at https://www.naaf.org/ for information, tips and resources on how you can be an ally to those in the Alopecia community. SHOW NOTES
What is an estate plan?
It is a plan that sets forth your intentions for how you wish to protect yourself, your stuff and your loved ones in the event that you die or become incapacitated.
Do I need an estate plan if I don’t own real estate?
Yes, you don’t need to own any real estate in order to have an estate plan. When it comes to estate planning, an estate consists of all money, property or other assets that a person may own in life or at the time of their death.
Does my estate have to be valued at a certain dollar amount to need an estate plan?
No, there is no minimum asset or dollar amount threshold for having an estate plan. Even if you don’t own anything, you should still have an estate plan to determine what happens to you in the event you become incapacitated.
What documents do you need to include in your estate plan for the purposes of incapacity planning?
- Healthcare Power of Attorney
- HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) Release
- Advanced Healthcare Directive (aka living will)
- General Power of Attorney
What documents do you need to include in your estate plan to dispose of your assets when you die?
Will—a written instrument that provides instructions on how to divide your assets upon your death.
Trust –a legal agreement that allows a third party, a trustee, to hold and direct assets on behalf of a beneficiary.
If I have limited resources or funds, what documents are most important for me to have drafted first?
If you can afford to at least sit down with an attorney, you should first invest in a consultation with a lawyer in your state who can provide you with state-specific advice based on your individual situation. If you can’t afford to sit down with an attorney:
- Start documenting and organizing all of your assets.
- Designate beneficiaries on all of your accounts (bank, investment, retirement…etc).

SHOW NOTES
What is the difference between a clearance item and a sale item?
A clearance item is a product that has been permanently or indefinitely reduced in price so that a store can either salvage or get rid of it. A sale item is a product that is reduced in price for a special reason for a limited amount of time.
Can anything go on sale or clearance?
Yes, generally a store would put anything on clearance that it wants to get rid of at any particular time. That means that anything from a certain variety of apple to a certain kind of rug might go on clearance.
When do things normally go on clearance?
Seasonal items like fresh foods or clothes will generally go on clearance towards the end of a season (i.e. summer, winter, fall, spring) when a store is trying to phase out or get rid of a specific kind of item like bathing suits, short, sunglasses…etc. Seasonal Items tend to go on clearance anywhere between one month to one week after a season ends.
How much of a discount can I get if something is on clearance?
Target will generally discount items at either 30%, 50% or 70% off. However, in very rare instances, with holiday items, they may mark something down to 90% off.
How long does it take for an item to get to 70% off?
Generally seasonal items start at 30% off around one week after the end of the season. If an item is still in stock by around the 6th week after the end of a season, it will go to 70% off. For example, summer clothes tend to hit the 70% off mark at the beginning of October.
How do you find clearance items?
Target generally has a clearance section, but there are tons of items in the store that are on clearance that are not in the clearance section. In order to find the deals, you have to track items in the store. If you don’t have time to track the deals yourself, follow bargain hunters on Instagram, YouTube or Tik Tok to be notified when they find a deal.

SHOW NOTES
Why does looking polished and put together matter?
The halo effect: According to research, good-looking people are more likely to be employed, are paid higher wages, more likely to be approved for a loan, more likely to negotiate better terms for a loan and are more likely to have attractive and higher paid spouses.
Upon a first impression, good looking and well dressed people are presumed to have highly desirable personality traits and/or characteristics such as altruism, stability and intelligence as if beautiful people have an invisible halo hanging over their heads. It is important to look your best to take advantage of the positive perceptions associated with looking good.
What is personal style?
Personal style is your ability to express who you are with what you wear.
How do you cultivate style?
Focus on figuring out who you are and then determine how you can communicate who you are through your clothes.
What are the different style personalities/classifications that we can use to try to define our style?
- Classic
- Creative
- Casual
- Sexy
- Dramatic
What are the different body type classifications?
There are generally 3 areas where women tend to carry their weight, in their bust, their waist or their hips. Determine where you carry the majority of your weight to figure out the general shape/type of your body.
What are some tips for dressing each body type?
Focus on how to disguise or balance out the areas of your body where you carry the most weight or that you want to draw the most attention to. For example, if you carry most of your weight in your waist (around your middle), you may want to consider wearing a top or jacket with shoulder pads or puffy sleeves to draw attention away from your middle to your shoulders and to balance out the proportions of your body.
Is black the most slimming color that you can wear?
No, color does not determine how your shape looks. How a garment fits including the material and cut of the fabric is the most significant factor in determining how your shape looks.
How do you elevate your wardrobe?
Once you have determined your style personality, find brands and stores that fit your style personality even if those brands are out of your current budget. If those brands fall outside of your current budget, determine how you can shift your spending habits to better align with the brands that you want to wear. For example, if you have allotted $1200 per year for your wardrobe, instead of spending $300 on 20 items every quarter, consider spending $150 on two items every quarter. By the end of the year, you’ll have invested in 8 high-quality pieces.

To have kids or not to have kids, THAT is the question that every adult woman must ask herself. Lately, more and more women are answering that question in the negative and ditching the “mommy” vibes for Rich Auntie Vibes.
Join Syd for S2 Ep8 Rich Auntie Vibes: Making a Life Without Children, as she sits down with Isabel Firecracker to discuss Isabel’s choice to live a childfree life and her work as a coach in support of other women who have chosen to do the same.
Isabel was born and raised in Colombia and has called five countries "home" in her 30-something years. A world traveler, avid kite surfer, and childfree intersectional feminist, Isabel is a pragmatic, no-nonsense coach for childfree women who struggle with feelings of insecurity, shame, guilt, or anger that surround their choice to not have children. She has designed her coaching programs specifically for this end: to help childfree women evolve and grow into the very best version of themselves.
Isabel is also host of The Honest Uproar podcast and co-host of Childfree Girls. She is also founder of The Uprising Spark and co-founder of Nunca Madres (Never Mothers). All of her entrepreneurial efforts are in support and celebration of women who desire to live childfree lives.

SHOW NOTES
Background/Facts:
- New CDC data found the US birth rate fell by 4% in 2020, the sharpest decline in nearly 50 years
- The provisional number of births for the United States in 2020 was 3,605,201, down 4% from the number in 2019 (3,747,540)
- This is the sixth consecutive year that the number of births has declined after an increase in 2014, and the lowest number of births since 1979
- From 2019 to 2020, the provisional number of births declined 3% for Hispanic women, 4% for both White and Black women, and 8% for Asian women
Why do you think women are deciding, at increasingly higher rates, not to have children?
Women have more options and information than ever before in terms of deciding how they want to live their lives.
What is the difference between childfree and childless?
Childfree refers to the conscious and voluntary decision not to parent, whether that be to a biological, foster or adopted child. Childless refers to a person who either wants to have a child, but has not yet had one; or wants to become a biological parent but cannot due to a medical inability to do so.
Is it difficult to date or find long term partners as a childfree woman?
Yes, dating as a childfree woman or man can be difficult because although there are large swaths of the population who do not want to have children, it can be difficult to find those people if you don’t know where to look. It can also be difficult because you are eliminating a large number of potential partners from your dating pool (i.e. men or women who DO want to have children).
Is it common for women to waiver in their decision to have children?
It does happen and people do change their minds. However, it is important to communicate to potential partners AS SOON AS POSSIBLE of your lack of desire to have children. You do not want to wait to tell potential partners that you either do not want to have children or that you’re unsure whether you want to have children. Not being clear and transparent about your position regarding children can cause a lot of issues in a relationship
Why did you decide not to have children?
When I thought about what I wanted my life to look like, having children didn’t align with my vision for my life. I encourage other women to do the same. Imagine what a perfect life looks for you and that ask yourself whether or not a child fits into that life.
What advice do you have for women who are on the fence about having children?
Whatever choice you make, make sure you make it for YOURSELF. DO NOT make such a huge decision for your parents, siblings or even your partner. Make sure that you have a baby because you genuinely want to bring a life into this world.

What is a financial plan?
A financial plan is a roadmap for your finances that brings your dreams to life.
How do I develop a financial plan?
Set goals. Make sure you set clear, plain and attainable goals for your money.
What are some good goals to have for your money if you don’t have any?
- Determine how much money you need to have in the bank to make you feel comfortable and let that number be your first goal.
- Identify what’s important to you and put those things in your spending plan.
- Determine ways that you can generate more income
What elements comprise a comprehensive financial plan?
- A budget for day-to-day expenses
- Annual Budget
- Debt repayment plan
- Education Financing Plan
- Retirement Financing Plan
- Estate plan (including insurance)
- Tax Strategy
What is a good strategy for debt repayment?
- Avoid incurring large amounts of debt that don’t provide a return.
- Don’t rush to pay down low interest debt because you can use that money to invest in higher yielding interest accounts.
- Prioritize paying off higher interest debt like credit card debt (any debt with greater than 6% interest).
Best advice for creating a solid financial plan?
- Consolidate and Get Organized. If you have a ton of bank accounts, credit cards, bills…etc. eliminate the accounts that do not serve a purpose. T
- Have the Right Resources in place
- For banking, check out Ally because it has no overdraft fees and provides high yield savings accounts.
- For credit cards, go to your current bank first. Credit unions tend to provide better rates and are more lenient in their lending requirements.
- For help with budgeting, check out the “You Need a Budget” and “Mint” apps to help you get your finances in order.
- Know When to Ask for Help. If you’re not good with managing money, consider consulting with a financial adviser who can help you get a plan together.

Tired of your job? Want to quit? Good, you’re not alone! According to Business Insider, 38 million Americans quit their jobs in 2021 and the trend has continued through the first quarter of 2022. This trend has snowballed into a movement that has been dubbed the Great Resignation.
Join Syd S2 Ep6 Making Career Moves Part I: How to Quit Your Job Like a Boss, as she sits down with attorney, mom, wife, BOSS and GREAT RESIGNER, Liku Amadi (formerly Midoshi), as the two discuss how Liku quit her job and started a business during the height of a global pandemic. Syd will also throw in some special nuggets about her own quitting journey.
Liku Madoshi is a Bay Area native and CA licensed attorney. Liku helps coaches and consultants establish a solid legal foundation for their online businesses by helping them to create and implement custom contracts within their business plans.

SHOW NOTES
In this episode, Liku offers some great tips on how to leave your job like a BOSS:
Step 1: Determine Your Next Move. Create a vision for what your next steps will look like whether that may be starting a business or starting a new job. Make sure you have a clear picture as to what your immediate future (1-6 months) will look like.
Step 2: Get Your finances in Order. Quitting your job without another job lined up only sounds good if you have enough money saved and/or financial support from friends, family, significant others…etc. to keep the lights on while you’re in between jobs. Make sure you know where your next mortgage/rent payment is coming from BEFORE you quit your job. You may also want to have a plan for how to continue certain benefits like health/medical/dental insurance without a job.
Step 3: Take Some Time to Reflect. Have a clear understanding of what you liked or didn’t like in your previous role. You want to make sure your new role or career move looks different than the one you just left. Otherwise, you may be leaving a bad situation for an even worse situation.
Step 4: Read the Company Rule Book. Generally, a company may have a right to claim ownership over any work that you create while you’re at work even if you’re creating it for yourself or your side hustle. Make sure you’re following the rules so that you don’t have any issues on your way out.
Step 5: Take Some Time Off. You may need to refer to Step 2 to determine just how much time you can take off in between gigs. However, take off as much time as your spirit and budget will allow. It’s important to take time to re-center and rejuvenate your mind and body before starting something new.
Step 6: Cultivate a Support System. Support of friends and family or even a therapist is super important to successfully navigating big life transitions. Make sure you choose your community wisely.

SHOW NOTES
What is a “high value” partner?
A high value man is a provider, someone who makes you feel safe mentally, emotionally and physically. A high value man is financially stable, makes sacrifices, makes you a priority in his life and puts family first.
What’s the key to finding a high value partner?
The key to finding a high value partner is finding yourself first. You must know yourself so that you can easily identify partners who can give you what you want and communicate to them clearly and accurately your specific needs.
The following are steps to finding a high value partner:
Step 1: You must recognize your own patterns.
Most of your insecurities stem from past traumas and/or childhood. You MUST commit to doing the inner work required to fix yourself and heal your past traumas so that you can attract a whole, healed and supportive partner.
Step 2: Make yourself Available
Physical Availability-- Online dating is a great place to meet people. You may also need to go out more, specifically to places where you can find the type of partner you want to attract.
Some Tips for making yourself more available:
- When online dating, set your location to where you believe your potential partner might be. For example, set your location to the more affluent area of town, if that’s where you think your potential partner lives or hangs out.
- When you go to the grocery store or Target, go to the fancy target or grocery to increase the likelihood of finding the man that you’re looking for.
- Wear clothes that you wouldn’t mind your future potential partner seeing you in.
Emotional availability—You must make yourself emotionally available to receive the love you want to attract. This means doing your inner work to heal yourself and cultivating a positive outlook on dating in general by being mindful of the content you consume and the people who you allow to poor into you.
Step 3: Set Boundaries and Communicate Them
Know your deal breakers so that you can communicate those and allow men who cannot meet those expectations with opportunities to de-select themselves.
Step 4: Allow Men to be Men
If you treat a man like a child, even a high-value man, he will act like a child. Don’t get in the habit of doing and being everything for your partner. Allow them the space to do and figure things out on their own. This will help them to be a better, more supportive partner to you when you need help.
