SHOW NOTES
What is burnout?
A syndrome characterized by chronic workplace stress that has not been properly managed that is specific to the workplace can bleed into other areas of life. There are three dimensions of burnout
- Energy depletion/decrease
- Increased mental distance
- Reduced professional output
How do I know if I’m burnt out or just stressed?
- Stress occurs in cycles, where an event happens, you’re stressed and then the event ends and stress recedes
- Healthy stress should include some type of celebration or rest to complete the cycle to ensure that stress recedes
- Burnout is continuous stress cycles over a long period of time
Can I manage repeated instances stress without getting burnout?
Yes, you can manage stress with preparation and planning in a way that won’t necessarily lead you to burnout. For example, if you know a stressful presentation, case or week is coming up, plan your workouts, meals and downtime in advance. Actually write these things in your schedule.
What are the symptoms of burnout?
- Detachment (not really present)
- Loss of concentration
- Fatigue
- Energy depletion
- Headaches/migraines
- Mild depression (i.e. hopelessness and despair)
- Cynicism
How do I know if I’m burnt out or depressed?
Depression is characterized by a deeper and more chronic sense of hopelessness, despair, irritability and/or anxiety that is more difficult to overcome. Mild depressive symptoms may be present in burnout but depressive symptoms associated with burnout are generally more situational/environment-specific and can be cured more easily with a change of environment or habits.
What can happen if we don’t address burnout?
Unaddressed burnout can lead to:
- Depression
- Heart Issues
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (difficulty pooping)
- Poor Diet
- Hair Loss
How do we overcome burnout?
NOTHING. DO NOTHING. The best thing you can do for yourself when you are burnt out is to REST. You need to reset your nervous system so that it can return to a healthy state of rest.

Is it just me or have you also noticed that the cost of literally everything has increased SIGNIFICANTLY in the last year? Oh good, you’ve noticed it, too? Couple that with wages that are either stagnant or rising at a much lower pace and the math just ain’t mathin. What is the difference between a manufacturer’s coupon and store coupon?
A manufacturer’s coupon is a coupon issued by the manufacturer of a product to entice consumers to purchase the product. A store coupon is a coupon issued by the store as a reward for shopping in their stores.
How do you stack coupons?

Once you have received all the in-store savings, you can use rebate apps like iBotta and Fetch to get a rebate on qualifying products.
Where do I go to find coupons?
- Paper coupons in newspapers/circulars
- Store apps that offer coupons (example: Kroger, Walgreens, Target, CVS, Dollar General, Publix…etc.)
- Walgreens is known for offering the highest valued coupons
What is a rebate app?
A rebate is money offered to you by an app as reimbursement for your purchase.
What are your favorite rebate apps?
- iBotta
- Fetch
Should we focus our attention on one or two stores?
Yes, start with one store and one deal to keep things manageable for yourself as you get started.
What stores do you focus on?
- CVS,
- Walgreens,
- Target,
- Wal-Mart
What couponers should we follow on social media?
- Savings with Sarah (Publix)
- Coupons with Alicia

Are you tired of giving away your hard-earned money to Uncle Sam? Are you tired of tax professionals telling you to “start an LLC” to save on taxes? Are you in search of some tax savings advice that’s applicable for your station in life? Me too! Starting a business, having children and/or getting married aren’t the ONLY ways to leverage the tax code for your benefit.
We just need a seasoned tax professional to give us the blueprint on how to save on our taxes as single, childless, business-less renters. I know, I know sounds like a tall order but that’s exactly what we are going to discuss in this week’s episode, Making Money Moves Part I: Income Tax Strategies for Regular People featuring tax strategist, CPA and owner of The Savvy Accountant, Ms. Atiya Brown.
Atiya, aka The Savvy Accountant, is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), a Certified Financial Education Instructor and owner of The Savvy Accountant. She is dually licensed in both Canada and the USA as a CPA and has over 16 years’ experience in the accounting/finance world.

SHOW NOTES
What are taxes?
Taxes are the revenue that the government collects in order to fund public goods and services like government operations, public schools and city infrastructure.
What are income taxes?
The tax that’s imposed against the earned money that you make.
How are income taxes calculated?
Income taxes are calculated by adding together all sources of income (W-2 Wages, Rental Income, Wages you pay yourself from your business…etc.) and then applying or subtracting all deductions against all earned income.
How do you reduce your taxable income?
You can reduce your taxable income through deductions or credits.
Deductions are amounts that you can reduce your taxable income by to reduce your overall tax liability (i.e. the total amount you owe to the government in taxes).
- You can either apply the standardized deduction or the itemized deduction
- Standard deduction is $12,950 applied to all individual taxpayers who have less than $12,950 in itemized deduction
- Itemized Deductions are individual deductions that can be applied against earned income and can include the following types of deductions
- Property taxes ◦ State taxes ◦ Mortgage Interest
- Charitable Donations ◦ Medical Expenses (up to a certain percentage)
- Marginalized Deductions serve to reduce your earned income to decrease your overall tax liability. For example, if you earn $100 in income for the year and have $80 in itemized deductions, your taxable income will become $20. If your applicable tax rate is ten percent (10%), you multiply the ten percent by your taxable income of $20 to get your tax liability which will be $2 Tax Credits serve as another tool to reduce your tax liability by reducing your net tax liability directly, dollar for dollar. For example, if your net tax liability is $2 as in the example above, and you have a $1 tax credit, your new tax liability will be $1. Tax credits are very difficult to come by.
Tax rates are the rates at which your income will be taxed and ranges from 10%-37%.
Pandemic Updates to the Tax Code:
- Charitable Donations—This year you can apply up to $600 in charitable donation deductions to your overall deductions even if you take the standard deductions
- Stimulus Check Payments – Stimulus check payments will be applied as a tax credit to your 2021 tax return
What are some strategies you can implement to reduce your tax liability?
- Leveraging retirement accounts
- Put money into a Health Savings Account (HAS)
- If you have a hobby or set of specialized skills that you can monetize, consider starting a business.
When is it time to seek help with your taxes?
- When your tax situation has undergone significant change (i.e. you’ve purchased a home, had a child, gotten married…etc.), consider consulting a tax professional to ensure that you are properly accounting your potential change in tax liability
- When the tax code changes

Monday Jan 17, 2022
The premiere episode of Season Two, Making Peace with My Body: A Conversation About Size, Weight and Wellness is a love letter to women of color. A letter to remind us that 1) our bodies, our weights and our shapes ARE healthy; and 2) the current standards of weight, beauty and wellness weren't created with our bodies in mind.
The prevailing current standard includes the Body mass index (BMI), a standard health assessment tool developed in 1832 to easily identify and detect obesity in adults, that has long been criticized as an ineffective measure of health and/or obesity, yet is still used in most healthcare facilities today.
According to Newsweek, an increasing amount of research shows that BMI and weight are not necessarily the main indicators of a person's health. Additionally, what's considered an unhealthy BMI—a number that may predict the onset of chronic diseases—is not the same across all races and ethnicities. Many who question the use of BMI in clinical settings point out that it's a health metric that's resulted from decades of research mostly conducted on white people.
Research also suggests that weight distribution or where you carry the majority of the weight on your body matters. For example, carrying weight around the middle of your body near vital organs is particularly troublesome; whereas, carrying weight around your hips, thighs and booty are significantly less risky to your overall health These are also. areas of the body where women of color have historically carried a great proportion of their weight.
I say all that to say that the game may not be rigged, but it certainly ain’t fair. We need healthy examples of body image, weight and size that were created with us in mind. Until then, accept this love letter as well as the reminder that YOU GOT IT GOIN ON, GIRL.
Join Syd and special guest, mother, wellness coach and momfidance coach, Dr. Tangie Grate as they discuss how to make peace with and love on your body during EVERY phase of your wellness journey (otherwise known as life).
Dr Tangie Grate is a full-time, working community pharmacist and part-time wellness coach. She is married to her college sweetheart, and they share an adventurous toddler. Through her work as a wellness coach, Tangie is on a mission to help women feel confident in their current bodies , by helping them to developing sustainable habits that promote self-love and weight loss. She believes that a wellness routine can be effortless, energetic and empowering.

SHOW NOTES
On this episode of The Sugar Free Podcast, Dr. Tangie Grate shares her journey to wellness including the lessons she’s learned along the way. Lessons that she uses to coach her wellness clients and that she has also so graciously shared with us.
Unhealthy Habits that contributed to weight gain for Dr. Tangie
- Eating quick fast meals (spaghetti_
- Eating fast food
- Eating late
- Drinking alcohol
- Not drinking enough water
- Not eating fruits/vegables
- Drinking Energy drinks
- Not exercising
- Not sleeping and/or resting enough
The turning point. The turning point for Dr. Tangie when she realized she needed to make a change in her lifestyle was becoming a mother. She wanted to be healthy for her future children and she also didn’t want to gain additional weight from child birth without having healthy habits in place to get it off. In short, Dr. Tangie got to the point where she was tired of herself and the way she was feeling and decided to make a change.
Dr. Tangie’s Best Advice for Loving Your Body
- Do NOT rely on the scale as your only measure of wellness. The scale CAN be a good tool to keep you accountable on your wellness journey, but it should not be the only thing you use to measure your success. Check to see if you are getting stronger (i.e. can carry heavier weights than you used to), or your clothes are fitting less snugly or your endurance (ability to move for longer periods of time) is increasing. Finally, if the scale is making you feel bad about yourself because you don’t like the number its displaying, STOP USING IT.
- Stand in the mirror naked (if you can), find something you love about your body and say it out loud. Mirror work and affirmations are wonderful tools for learning to love your body.
How to Get Started on Your Wellness Journey
- Identify your why for starting your wellness journey. Determine how you feel about your self and assess how you feel both physically and mentally. then decide whether you like how you feel or what you need to start doing in order to change
- Find a supportive community. No journey should be undertaken in isolation. You need a supportive community to help you stay accountable and consistent on your journey..
- Start small. Develop small, healthy habits. You don’t have to start with working out for 60 minutes a day. Start with 20 minutes a day 3 days a week to develop consistency. Doing small things consistently is better than doing large things sporadically.

BONUS: How to Be Your Best You in 2022 /w Syd Mack
Saturday Jan 01, 2022
Saturday Jan 01, 2022
Every new year comes with it new opportunities for growth, improvement, elevation and re-invention….if you plan for it!! Join Syd this week in a very special BONUS episode as she shares her tips and tricks for how to be your BEST you in 2022.
Season 2 Premier Alert: of The Sugar Free Podcast is almost here! Make sure you like, subscribe and follow The Sugar Free Podcast on social media platforms and where ever you listen to your podcasts so you don’t miss the Season 2 premiere on Syd’s Birthday, January 17, 2022!
Show Notes:
Syd has 7 tips for making the most out of your 2022:
Step 1 Reflection: Before you can set your goals or make a plan for 2022, you must first take inventory of your 2021. What did you do well? What did you do not so well? What made you happy? What made you miserable? What do you want to do more of? What could you live without? Ask yourself these questions before doing any 2022 planning.
Step 2 Let Go of Fear: Fear has NO place in 2022. Leave it in 2021.
Step 3 Be Honest With Yourself: Take a moment to be bare, naked, honest and vulnerable with yourself about what you TRULY want in your life. Not the things someone told you that you should want or the things you think are most likely to bring you success. Be honest about what you want no matter how big or small.
Step 4 Write it Down or Tell a Friend: Once you’ve determined what you want, write it down, tell a friend, make a vision board. Why? You need to make it REAL and you need some way of holding yourself accountable. If your goals only exist in your head, they become too easy to ignore.
Step 5 Sacrifice: Don’t be afraid to let go of some less important things in your life to make room for the more important things. Letting go of things is NEVER easy or comfortable, but if greatness were easy, everyone would be doing it.
Step 6 Be Selfish: Make yourself, your dreams, your goals, your needs, your wants, your finances…etc. your BIGGEST concern in 2022. EVERYTHING and EVERYONE else can take a backseat for just this year. Give yourself 100% for 12 months and see how much your life changes in just one year.
Step 7 DO IT: Go get it!! Do it, do something!! Don’t concern yourself with results or aesthetics, just put whatever plan you’ve articulated into action. ACTION is the key to manifestation.

Overcoming Imposter Syndrome /w Abimbola Oladokun (Remix)
Monday Dec 27, 2021
Monday Dec 27, 2021
Occupying spaces where you are one of a select few or the “only”…the only woman, the only person of color, the only non-binary person…etc. can be a truly isolating experience. The treatment you experience as a marginalized person can not only make you feel alone, but it can also make you feel ‘less than’ or like you don’t belong. This, my friends is the root of imposter syndrome. This syndrome will have you believing you are made of cheap plastic, when in fact, you AND your credentials are as strong, resilient and valuable as platinum. Never again will we allow imposter syndrome to make us see ourselves as anything but what we are, GOLDEN.
Season One Remix Episode 1.10, Feeling Real Fake: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome, discusses “Imposter Syndrome,” a disease most often prescribed to women characterized by internal feelings of inadequacy, inferiority and/or lack of belonging in the workplace that often ignores the external factors that contribute to these feelings. Join Syd and guest, Abimbola Oladokun, as they explore the internal and external factors that have contributed to their feelings of imposter syndrome and the tools/resources they have used to overcome those feelings.
Abimbola is a San Francisco-based tech attorney. She’s a lifelong learner, fashionista, traveler, and enjoys spending time with loved ones. When not posting various IG stories about how she sees the world, you can find her planning her next trip or reviewing Netflix for her next fix. You can find her on IG at @the.a.league.

Show Notes:
Definition: According to the Harvard Business Review, Imposter syndrome is a label characterized by INTERNAL feelings of doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud. It disproportionately affects high-achieving people, who find it difficult to accept their accomplishments that is often assigned to women. One issue with the characterization is that it doesn’t take into account the EXTERNAL factors that ultimately contribute to these feelings for women.
What external experiences have caused you to question your place in a professional setting?
- Seeds of imposter syndrome were planted as early as middle school for Abi when she felf that she was “othered” in homogenous spaces by asking her, the only Black kid in class if she belonged in an Honors Class when other students have to submit any proof of their belonging
- In professional settings, the way people talk to her, not getting promoted, the way people have treated her have contributed to her questioning her place at work
- Microaggressions in the workplace against persons of color can be characterized as death by one million paper cuts because most acts committed against marginalized people are small and covert but over time have the cumulative effect of making people feel like they don’t belong
- The experiences of most Black and Brown people is different than their more privileged counterparts because Black and Brown people tend to have less access and connection to these spaces by virtue of being the first or the second person in their families to gain access to certain spaces.
- Experience also may differ based on socio-economic background. It can be difficult to thrive in competitive academic or professional spaces when you’re also trying to manage your survival.
- Imposter Syndrome can be traumatic because in most cases imposter syndrome manifests itself as repeated instances and experiences that may have scarred you that you need to heal from.
- Having to do more and be better than counterparts in order to find success.
- Differences not being valued and/or understood in the workplace
What internal experiences or thoughts have caused you to question your place in a professional setting?
- A lack of celebration or acknowledgement of successes because of a feeling that you are doing what you’re supposed to do to survive verses that you’ve done something great
- Internal feelings of unworthiness because you haven’t “suffered” enough to earn your place
- Internal thoughts of being unfairly critical of EVERY thought, action and behavior based on a fear that every mistake or misstep may cause you to lose your job or irreparably tarnish your reputation
What work have you done to build your confidence over the years and reinforce the fact that you’ve earned your place in the world?
- Give myself grace—It’s okay to make mistakes
- Practice Gratitude
- Learning to work in a way that’s not abut exacting revenge on those who may have harmed you
- Trust the fact that you’ve done the work
- Build a thick skin
Advice for overcoming imposter syndrome
- Figure out what makes you happy, brings you joy and grounds you and do those things OFTEN
- Develop a support system that keeps you grounded during the tough times

Tips from my Mama on how to cook greens for the holidays:
- Use pork (ham hock or neckbone) or some kind of smoked meat to flavor your greens
- ALWAYS cook the meat FIRST
- Boil the meat in water to make a stock
- Add greens at the very end when water is almost cooked down so greens will absorb the most flavorful part of the stock
- If greens still need more flavor, add Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix to taste
Best advice for making the holidays special?
- Keep things festive and interesting. Make sure everyone has a GREAT and memorable time.

SHOW NOTES
I read an article recently that stated 60% of Millenials making over $60,000 live paycheck to paycheck. What factors/obstacles are keeping us from financial stability?
- Inflation is outpacing earnings
- Cost of living is too high
- College tuition is too high
- Childcare is expensive
How much of your current salary should you be saving for retirement?
- 12-15% including any matching or contributions provided by your current employer. However, you can work up to that gradually if you’re not ready to put a full 12
- The goal for a comfortable retirement should be to save at least $2.1 million or 25x your current salary for retirement. Start NOW.
Is $100k still THE marker for financial stability?
- It depends on your location. One hundred thousand dollars may be enough if you live in Oklahoma, maybe not if you live in New York.
- Generally the marker for annual earnings is probably closer to $125,000 for financial stability but may go up or down depending on location
- You should be striving to have a solid structure and plan in place to achieve financial stability. The plan should include paying your bills, emergency savings, investing and saving for retirement.
How much do children cost?
- The average cost for caring for one child is $300k-$400k from age 0-18 years old, but you don’t need all of that on day one.
What tools do you recommend for new investors?
- Public – a social media app for investing
Best advice for saving and investing
- Start now and be consistent
- The key to investing is time and consistency. Small amounts add up to sizeable amounts over time.
- You can save and invest no matter how much you’re making. If you had put $100/mo in Google stock from 2012-present, you would have $74k now. It’s okay to start small.
